If you're looking for a truly breathtaking vacation, we recommend an original and astonishing destination: Peru and the discovery of Machu Picchu. This ancient Inca citadel is one of the world's most popular tourist destinationsand it's easy to see why.

A mountain peak at the heart of global tourism

Nestled in the mountain top in the AndesMachu Picchu offers breathtaking views, fascinating history and plenty of opportunities for adventure. Every year hundreds of thousands of people flock to Machu Picchu to get a glimpse of this ancient marvel. But the problem is, it may not be for much longer, potentially. The number of visitors is having a negative impact on the site, and measures need to be taken to protect it. This is why UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has placed Machu Picchu on its list of World Heritage in Danger. In other words, if nothing is done soon, this architectural marvel could be lost forever.

So what can you do? First of all, you can visit Machu Picchu as soon as possible. Yes, it may be crowded, but it's well worth it to see it before it disappears.

Machu Picchu - When to go

The best time to visit Machu Picchu is the "dry" season, which runs from April to October. Not only will the weather be more pleasant (the rainy season can be pretty miserable), but you'll also have a better chance of getting tickets. In fact, as of 2019, visitors will have to reserve their place in advance. The number of people allowed into the site is limited to 6,000 per day. But, ideally, 2,500 per day should preserve the site.

Tickets go on sale four months before the date of your visit, and often sell out quickly - sometimes within hours! If you absolutely must see Machu PicchuSo it's best to start planning early.

Exploring Machu Picchu - What's there to see?

Once you have reaches Machu Picchuit's time to start exploring! Start by visiting the Temple of the Sun, an important religious site for the Incas. Don't forget to stop off at the Intihuatana stone before you leave; this unique carved stone is said to have astronomical and religious significance.

If you're feeling really adventurous, climb Mount Huayna Picchu for an even better view of Machu Picchu. But be warned: this strenuous hike is not for the faint-hearted!

Hiking the Inca Trail

No trip to Machu Picchu would be complete without a hike along the famous Inca Trail. This 26-mile hike takes between four and six days, but is well worth the effort. The trail takes you through breathtaking scenery, past ruins and archaeological sites, and culminates in a spectacular sunrise over the lost city of the Incas.

Souvenir store in Aguas Calientes

After a long day of hiking and exploring, relax your tired muscles in Aguas Calientes, a small town near Machu Picchu. This town is famous for its hot springs, which are said to have healing properties. You can also find many souvenirs that will help you remember your trip long after your return. Don't forget to buy an alpaca wool blanket; it makes an excellent gift and will keep you warm on cold winter nights.

What's important to remember when visiting Machu Picchu?

When you do, remember that you'll have to do a lot of walking, even up steep inclines. Also, make sure you have sunscreen and insect repellent (there are a lot of mosquitoes in Peru), and remember to bring cash (US dollars are widely accepted).

How long will it take?

Machu Picchu is huge - it covers an area of almost 10 km²! So it's impossible to see it all in a single day. Most experts recommend spend at least two days on site so you can explore at your own pace and enjoy the show to the full. Of course, if you're short on time (or money), one day is better than none! Just be aware that you may have to make decisions about what you won't be able to see.

As you can see Machu Picchu is a truly unforgettable destination (more information). With its breathtaking views, fascinating history and numerous adventure possibilities, there's something for everyone. Whether you want to hike through breathtaking scenery or simply soak up the culture (and maybe buy a few souvenirs), you're sure to have an unforgettable experience.
