Singapore Airlines Unveils Futuristic Long-Haul Cabins with Double Beds by 2027

Singapore Airlines has unveiled a major transformation of its long-haul cabins, investing more than SGD 2 billion in a complete overhaul set to begin in the second half of 2027. These innovations, first deployed on part of its Airbus A350 fleet and later on the new Boeing 777-9, promise to redefine in-flight comfort standards with sliding doors, double beds in first class, and modular spaces.
For the first time in commercial aviation, Singapore Airlines’ first class will feature enclosed suites with sliding doors, designed to offer hotel-like privacy. Each suite can transform into a double bed measuring 2.03 meters long by 1.52 meters wide, featuring Poltrona Frau leather and a personal wardrobe. A 32-inch 4K touchscreen and wireless Bang & Olufsen headphones complete this premium experience. “These cabins have been designed to make the experience more comfortable, flexible, and enriching,” explains Lee Lik Hsin, Singapore Airlines’ Commercial Director.
In business class, innovation centers on sliding doors—a first for the airline. Each seat converts into a fully flat bed of two meters in length, with a width of 60.9 cm on the 777-9 and 55.8 cm on the A350. Central pairs can even be arranged as double sleeping berths, while 20- or 22-inch 4K screens and USB-C ports cater to modern travelers. The modular design, with retractable tables, optimizes space for optimal rest.
Singapore Airlines conducted a study with over 5,000 travelers to design these cabins. The new seats, certified on the Boeing 777-9, await validation on the A350 before deployment in 2027. The program covers 72 aircraft: 41 Airbus A350-900 (including seven ULR variants) and 31 Boeing 777-9. The A350 will receive the new business-class seat, while the 777-9 will feature all four new cabin classes (first, business, premium economy, and economy), totaling 300 seats.
For premium economy passengers, the 777-9’s 36 seats will be arranged in a 2-4-2 configuration, with 40-inch seat pitch, footrests, and 16-inch 4K screens. In economy, the 3-4-3 layout will offer 44.7 cm-wide seats, 13-inch screens, and Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity. These innovations aim to enhance comfort and reduce passenger fatigue on long-haul flights.
The KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system will also be revamped with over 2,500 content options, a modernized interface, and spatial audio features. Starlink connectivity, set for deployment in early 2027 on select aircraft, will provide high-speed internet even over oceans. Dining will be refreshed with over 100 new dishes and desserts, and Christofle tableware for premium classes. The SilverKris lounges will receive a SGD 130 million upgrade to modernize their spaces.
These transformations align with Singapore Airlines’ broader strategy to elevate its service. The airline is betting on intimacy, flexibility, and innovation to stand out in a competitive market. With these new cabins, it aims to attract discerning travelers willing to pay for a premium experience while reinforcing its leadership in long-haul aviation.
First-Class Suites with Double Beds Debuting in 2027
Singapore Airlines’ first class introduces a groundbreaking innovation: enclosed suites with sliding doors, offering privacy comparable to a private space. Each suite can transform from a two-seat sofa into a double bed measuring 2.03 meters long by 1.52 meters wide, featuring premium leather and personal storage. A 32-inch 4K screen and wireless Bang & Olufsen headphones ensure high-quality entertainment. These suites, available from 2027 on the Boeing 777-9, will feature the largest double bed in commercial aviation.
The airline’s seven Airbus A350-900 ULR (Ultra Long Range) aircraft will be the first to receive this new first-class suite, marking a global first for Singapore Airlines. These aircraft, without an economy class, will offer an even more exclusive experience on ultra-long-haul routes like Singapore-Paris or Singapore-New York. The remaining A350-900s will feature the new business-class seat.
Modularity is at the heart of this innovation. Passengers can save their preferences (lighting, seat position) via the myKrisWorld app to recreate them on future trips. This personalized approach aims to improve loyalty among premium clients willing to invest in a high-end experience.
Business Class and Premium Economy: Innovation for Comfort
In business class, Singapore Airlines introduces sliding doors—a first for the airline. Each seat converts into a fully flat two-meter bed, with a width of 60.9 cm on the new 777-9 and 55.8 cm on the A350. Central pairs can be arranged as double sleeping berths, offering unprecedented flexibility. 20- or 22-inch 4K screens, USB-C ports, and wireless charging meet modern traveler needs, while integrated controls allow passengers to save settings for optimal comfort.
The premium economy cabin on the Boeing 777-9 will feature 36 seats in a 2-4-2 layout, with a 40-inch seat pitch. Passengers will enjoy footrests, personal storage, and 16-inch 4K screens. Designed to offer superior comfort to economy while remaining accessible, this cabin targets travelers seeking a strong value proposition on long-haul flights.
Economy class, exclusive to the 777-9, will use a 3-4-3 configuration with 44.7 cm-wide seats and 13-inch screens. Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity, along with optimized legroom, will enhance passenger comfort. These innovations aim to reduce fatigue and make long flights more pleasant.
Connectivity and Dining: Redesigned Services for 2027
Singapore Airlines will modernize its KrisWorld in-flight entertainment system with over 2,500 content options, a refreshed interface, and spatial audio features. Some cabins will feature OLED screens for superior image quality. Starlink connectivity, launching in early 2027, will provide high-speed internet even over oceans—a major innovation for long-haul passengers.
Dining will also be refreshed with over 100 new dishes and desserts, alongside Christofle tableware for premium classes. Pyjamas will debut in business class, and amenity kits will be reimagined. The SilverKris lounges will receive a SGD 130 million upgrade to modernize their spaces, offering more areas for work, dining, and relaxation.
These improvements, combined with the new cabins, position Singapore Airlines as an innovation leader in air transport. With an investment exceeding SGD 2 billion, the airline demonstrates its commitment to delivering an unparalleled experience while strengthening its competitiveness against rivals.
These transformations are part of a broader upscale strategy aimed at attracting premium clientele and retaining the most discerning travelers. The new cabins, featuring double beds in first class and sliding doors in business class, redefine in-flight comfort standards and solidify Singapore Airlines’ position as an industry pioneer.
