Thailand, famous for its white sandy beaches and beautiful scenery, is one of the most popular tourist destinations. In 2020, it welcomed over 39 million foreign visitors, down 74% on the previous year. However, the Thai government has announced new rules for foreign travelers wishing to visit the country from Monday January 9, 2023. From this date, tourists will be able to re-enter Thailand, subject to sanitary conditions and a PCR-negative certificate dated less than 72 hours before arrival, as well as medical insurance and an online declaration form. In addition, the Thai government has re-introduced a tourist visa on arrival with a 60-day validity and the possibility of extending this visa for a further 30 days. Travelers wishing to stay longer will need to obtain a visa in advance.

Thailand for tourists from January 9

The Thai authorities have announced that Thailand will open its borders to foreign tourists from January 9, 2023. Travelers will need to meet the following conditions to enter the country: have a negative PCR test certificate for Covid-19, acquire a medical insurance policy and commit to a PCR self-test on arrival.

PCR tests required to enter Thailand

Travelers will be required to present a certificate of negative PCR testing for Covid-19 dated less than 72 hours prior to arrival. In addition to this, tourists will be required to undergo another PCR test on arrival in Thailand, and may be subject to further testing at their discretion.

Compulsory medical insurance

All tourists must also acquire sufficient medical insurance to cover medical and hospital expenses in the event of Covid-19 contamination. The medical insurance policy must cover at least 100,000 USD and be valid for the duration of the stay.

Mandatory quarantine

Travelers must undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival in Thailand. Quarantine can be carried out in hotels or residences. Travelers must register with the local authorities and follow the health and safety protocols defined by the government.

Travel restrictions in Thailand

Travelers must complete an electronic consent form and present it on arrival. Foreign travelers are not permitted to stay in coastal areas or visit national parks. Foreign travelers are not allowed to visit religious sites or Buddhist temples. Overseas travel is prohibited for all foreign travelers in Thailand.

The Thai authorities have declared that they will be taking additional measures to contain and control the spread of Covid-19. Tourists will be required to comply with the Thai authorities' guidelines and regulations.
