Richard Goyder, Chairman of Qantas, clings to his post despite pressure

Published on September 27, 2023, Richard Goyder, the head of Australian airline Qantas, remains firm in his decision not to step down as chairman, despite numerous calls for him to submit his resignation following an accumulation of incidents that have tarnished the company's reputation.

Renewed support despite the turbulence

In response to questions from an Australian Senate committee, Richard Goyder has received the support of the majority shareholders and the Board of Directors to continue running Qantas with Vanessa Duson, the incumbent CEO. Goyder says he is convinced of the importance of the challenges to be overcome and the issues to be resolved, but that he would be prepared to reconsider his position if confidence in him waned.

Controversies and repercussions

  • Protesting pilots and shareholders are demanding Goyder's departure after a series of layoffs deemed unacceptable and a rise in flight fares, despite substantial financial aid from the Australian government.
  • The negative impact on Qantas' image led to the resignation of Alan Joyce, the previous CEO, who retired prematurely after 15 years at the helm.
  • The management is also facing allegations of government manipulation to limit Qatar Airways' expansion in Australia.

Investigation and government intervention

A Senate committee is investigating the Minister for Transport's decision to prevent Qatar Airways from increasing its presence in Australia by offering 21 additional flights a week. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has denied any form of protectionism in the matter.

As the backlash intensifies, Richard Goyder and the Qantas management team seem determined to stay the course and weather the turbulence with a resolute approach, attentive to the signals sent out by shareholders and the evolution of the air transport market.
