ITA Airways revolutionizes air travel: Large dogs allowed in cabin from August 2026

From August 3, 2026, ITA Airways will revolutionize air travel in Italy by allowing certain large dogs to travel in the cabin without a transport cage. This groundbreaking European initiative responds to growing passenger demand and aligns with unprecedented regulatory dynamics under the aegis of ENAC, Italy’s civil aviation authority.
Dubbed « Large Dog On Board », this initiative marks a turning point in airlines’ policies toward pets. Until now, large dogs had to travel in the hold or be placed in a container under the seat, in line with dominant European practices. ITA Airways is taking an additional step by permitting dogs weighing up to 30 kg to share the cabin space with their owners, subject to strict conditions.
Bookings will be available immediately via the CIAO customer service office, but with a minimum four-day advance notice before departure. Initially, the offer will be limited to certain domestic routes, in compliance with ENAC quotas. Two large dogs will be accepted per flight: one in business class up to 30 kg, and another in economy class up to 15 kg. From October, this limit will increase to four dogs, including two of standard size.
The decision follows a September 2025 test between Milan Linate and Rome Fiumicino, during which two large dogs traveled in the cabin. This demonstration validated the service’s operational feasibility ahead of its official launch. By relaxing its rules for domestic flights, ENAC paved the way for this innovation while strictly regulating acceptance conditions.
For ITA Airways, this service addresses a strong customer demand, as explained by CEO Joerg Eberhart: « We have listened to our customers and collaborated with ENAC to allow them to travel with their four-legged companions, avoiding separation and making the flying experience more comfortable for the whole family. » This approach places the human experience at the heart of travel without compromising safety.
A European first with potential international expansion
For now, ITA Airways is focusing on the Italian domestic market, but the airline clearly aims to gradually expand the offer. An extension to international flights is envisaged, subject to a review of limits and procedures by the competent authorities. This caution is justified: once outside the national framework, safety and operational rules become more complex, particularly regarding harmonization with the requirements of layovers and destination countries.
Italy appears here as a testing ground for regulatory experimentation, with ITA Airways leading the way. If the system proves effective and safe, it could inspire other European or even international airlines. This evolution aligns with a broader trend of personalizing air services, where comfort and flexibility increasingly take precedence over traditional standards.
This initiative also highlights the growing role of national regulators in adapting transport rules to passenger expectations. ENAC has demonstrated innovation by allowing, under conditions, heavier dogs in the cabin without a transport cage—a departure from Europe’s usual standards.
Strict rules to ensure safety and comfort for all
Transporting large dogs in the cabin is not a simple formality. ITA Airways imposes several constraints to guarantee everyone’s safety on board. Animals must remain secured without obstructing emergency exits or other passengers. The airline retains significant leeway on the number of animals accepted, but the priority remains the comfort of all travelers.
For domestic flights, ENAC now allows, under conditions, dogs over 10 kg in the cabin without a transport cage—a significant evolution from previous practices. This new Italian doctrine could pave the way for a gradual relaxation of rules in other European countries, where current constraints weigh heavily on travelers with large dogs.
The service is designed to meet a specific demand: owners of large dogs who wish to avoid separation during travel. This issue particularly affects leisure trips or moves, where the animal’s presence is essential for some passengers.
An economic and operational model to refine
ITA Airways has not yet announced the fares for this new service. However, it is likely that transporting a large dog in the cabin will incur a surcharge, reflecting both logistical costs and the added value provided. Pricing will need to be competitive to attract budget-conscious customers while ensuring sufficient profitability for the airline.
Operationally, managing this service requires close coordination between commercial teams, ground staff, and crews. Each flight must be planned with animal-related constraints in mind, including systematic verification of bookings and boarding conditions. While this adds complexity, it could become a differentiating asset for ITA Airways in an increasingly competitive market.
The airline is banking on this innovation to strengthen its image as an innovative, customer-focused carrier. A bold bet in an industry where margins are often tight and airlines seek differentiation through increasingly personalized services.
A breakthrough that could inspire other airlines
If ITA Airways succeeds, other carriers may follow its lead and adapt their own policies. Pet transport in the cabin is a growing concern for travelers, especially those who consider their animals part of the family.
In Europe, where rules vary by country, harmonization would be welcome. Today, a French or German traveler often faces strict constraints, while an Italian traveler could soon benefit from greater flexibility. Such disparities could push European regulators to rethink current standards.
ITA Airways could thus become a laboratory for the entire aviation sector. If its large-dog cabin transport service proves successful, it could serve as a model for other airlines looking to innovate in customer relations.
What these new rules mean for travelers
For owners of large dogs, this innovation opens new possibilities. No need to choose between flying and bringing their pet: ITA Airways offers an alternative that combines safety, comfort, and flexibility. A solution that could appeal to travelers seeking practicality and peace of mind.
However, accessibility will be key. Any surcharges must not make the service prohibitive, or risk limiting its appeal. ITA Airways will need to strike a balance between profitability and accessibility to reach the widest possible audience.
This initiative aligns with a broader trend of personalized air services. Airlines are increasingly differentiating themselves through offers tailored to specific customer needs, whether business travelers, families, or pet enthusiasts.
For ITA Airways, the challenge will be to maintain service quality while managing potentially high demand. Clear and transparent communication on boarding conditions, fares, and constraints will be essential to avoid disappointment and ensure a positive experience for all.
