The Luanda Airport Concession: A fierce battle between airport giants

A select group of international giants in the airport management industry are competing for the concession rights to Angola's recently inaugurated imposing air gateway - the new Luanda International Airport. With a multi-dimensional composition of competitors from Germany, France, South Africa and potentially Turkey, the selection of the final operator is shaping up to be announced at the end of next February.

Who are the contenders for the concession?

  • Fraport AG (Germany) - with a strong presence and expansion strategy on the African continent.
  • Vinci SA (France) - recent owner of the Cape Verde airports and manager of airport infrastructures in Tunisia.
  • Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) - a major operator controlling South Africa's main airports.

These major players, with their recognized expertise in global airport management, are moving towards a competitive battle for the role of concessionaire for the new Angolan hub, according to information leaked by Bloomberg.

High stakes for a growth platform

The contenders are not chosen at random. Each has already proved its worth in the global airport market, as highlighted in the annual report of Fraport AG, which is aiming to make a strong entry into the African market, which is currently on the rise.

The New Luanda Airport - A Growth Lever for Angola

With this brand-new building, Angola aims to transform its capital into a strategic air traffic center for Southern Africa. The project, valued at over three billion US dollars and carried out by Chinese construction companies, aims to handle some 15 million passengers a year, positioning Luanda as the continent's second airport hub, just behind Cairo International Airport.

Crucial date for the Concession

The call for tenders for a concessionaire for this air hub was officially launched on November 17. The outcome of this award, scheduled to close at the end of February 2024, is eagerly awaited by the candidates and the international airport sector.

The competition for the concession of the new Luanda airport embodies the strategic and economic importance of airport infrastructure in Africa. It also symbolizes the growing interest of global giants in emerging African markets, promising growth and new opportunities.
