Only luggage weighing a maximum of 23 kg for the hold and 12 kg for the cabin is permitted for air travel. However, passengers who find themselves with suitcases weighing in excess of this standard end up paying excess baggage charges. To avoid this, we recommend weighing your suitcase before leaving for the airport, that's the advantage of a lightweight suitcase when flying! Here's how.

Weighing your suitcase with a bathroom scale

In reality, weighing your suitcase with an electronic or mechanical scale is not a very reliable option. However, when done properly, you can achieve satisfactory results. Similarly, using a bathroom scale to weigh a suitcase is an ideal tip for people in a hurry. To determine the weight of your trunk using this simple method, you need to :

  • Step on the scale to weigh yourself,
  • Note your weight before going down to pick up your suitcase
  • Step back on the scale to weigh yourself again,
  • Subtract your weight with the suitcase from your weight without the suitcase.

The result is the weight of your luggage. It's a very quick trick, and eliminates the need to buy a luggage scale. However, it's important to bear in mind that you won't get the exact weight, but rather an approximate result.

Weighing your suitcase with a luggage scale

Using a luggage scale to weigh your suitcase is still the best way to determine the weight of your suitcase before you fly. Highly efficient, it gives you a precise weight reading at a very low cost, since it's a one-off purchase. If you travel regularly, it's a good idea to get one. It'll save you the hassle of paying excess baggage fees at the airport every time, a specialty of my friend Bérénice from the Bérénice blog.  I love travelling 😉

Easy to use, simply suspend the suitcase handle from the strap or hook of this accessory and lift. Wait until the figures have stabilized before lifting the weight of your suitcase.

Add the weight of the clothes and the weight of the suitcase

As simple as it sounds, this tip is an excellent way of weighing a suitcase without a scale. However, you should be aware that it's a rather tedious practice, even if it's effective. To begin with, you need to know the weight of each item of clothing in the suitcase. Then you need to add up the weights of all the garments. Once you've done this, look for the weight of the suitcase on the label inside.

For those wondering how to find out the weight of each item of clothing, please note that :

For women

Shoes (sandals) weigh between 400 and 600 g. Dresses weigh between 120 and 350 g, and underwear between 15 and 70 g. Suits weigh between 800 and 950 g. Evening dresses generally weigh between 120 and 500 g, while leggings weigh between 250 and 300 g and shirts between 100 and 200 g.
