Volotea strengthens its presence in Asturias with new European routes

El-Adjim Baddani·

Low-cost airline Volotea is stepping up its development strategy in northern Spain by announcing a significant expansion of its base at Asturias airport (Oviedo) for the 2026 summer season. This initiative includes the opening of four new international routes, the reinforcement of existing services and the assignment of a third Airbus A320 to the site, marking a key step in the consolidation of this regional hub.

New European destinations from Asturias

For the 2026 summer season, Volotea is inaugurating four new international routes from Asturias airport. Travellers will now be able to fly to Brussels, Rome-Fiumicino, Porto and Paris-Orly. These new services, representing over 150,000 seats, add to an already substantial network from this Spanish base, which will now include 24 routes operated by the airline.

The route to Brussels will be offered on the basis of three weekly flights. This marks a geographical diversification for Volotea, which until now has concentrated its Belgian operations on Charleroi airport. Flights to Rome, Porto and Paris-Orly are designed to strengthen the international accessibility of a region which, although less exposed to mass tourism, is experiencing a significant growth in its attractiveness on the European short- and medium-haul market.

Return from Menorca and fleet optimization

In addition to these new routes, Volotea is reactivating its service between Asturias and Minorca, a particularly popular route for seaside tourism. More than 36,000 seats will be available on this route, with up to four weekly frequencies during the peak summer season. This strategy is in line with Volotea's strategy of connecting medium-sized cities to leisure destinations, outside the traditional major hubs.

To support this expansion, the company has stationed a third Airbus A320 at its Asturias base. This decision completes the transition of the local fleet from the smaller A319s to the larger A320s. This change significantly increases the number of seats offered per flight, responding to the growing demand from Asturian travellers to Europe and from European tourists attracted by the Cantabrian coast.

A fast-growing regional hub

With more than 1.2 million seats scheduled for departure from Asturias in 2026, Volotea has posted an increase of 47% on the previous year. This volume represents more than three times the capacity offered before the pandemic, confirming the strategic role of this base in the airline's network. At European level, Volotea plans to operate over 430 routes and offer around 14 million seats by 2026.

This growth comes against a backdrop of restructuring in the Spanish air transport market, marked in particular by the withdrawal of certain players from regional bases, in the face of rising airport charges. Volotea seems to be capitalizing on these developments to strengthen its position in high-potential regions.
