Rising fuel surcharges by airlines: what impact on airline tickets?

The volatility of oil prices, an essential component of airline operating costs, is forcing airlines to adjust their fares. Several carriers have recently decided to increase their fuel surcharges, a measure which has a direct impact on the final price of an airline ticket.
Air Austral revises its fuel surcharge
In a press release dated March 11, 2026, Air Austral announced a revision to its fuel surcharge, designated by the code YQ. This change takes effect for tickets issued from this date. The routes most affected by this increase include those between mainland France and the islands of La Réunion and Mayotte, as well as the route between La Réunion and Bangkok. The increase amounts to 60 euros per trip in Leisure class and 85 euros per trip in Comfort class.
Air Europa follows suit on long-haul flights
At Air Europa, the situation is similar. The Spanish airline has informed travel agencies of an increase in its YQ tax on long-haul flights. The fuel surcharge has risen by 20 euros for a one-way trip (or 40 euros for a round trip) in economy class. For business class, the increase is more substantial, reaching 50 euros for a one-way trip (or 100 euros for a round trip).
Air France-KLM adjusts transatlantic fares
Not to be outdone, the Air France-KLM group has also increased its carrier surcharge (YR) on transatlantic flights to North America. This surcharge has been raised by an average of 30 euros. This measure applies to all flights operated under the transatlantic joint venture, including those operated by Delta, according to information relayed by Echotouristique. These fare adjustments reflect the difficulty for airlines to absorb the volatility of raw material costs in a tense economic climate.
These fuel surcharges are included in the price of the ticket in order to maintain airline profitability in the face of rising operating costs, while adapting to fluctuations in the oil market. Passengers are therefore invited to check the fare conditions when booking, to anticipate these increases.
