Tunisia sees explosive summer bookings: Why French travelers are flocking to Djerba and Hammamet

Marc Leonelli·

With a 131% surge in bookings for organized stays in May 2026 compared to last year, Tunisia emerges as the Mediterranean’s top summer destination. The country ranks third for direct flights from France, driven by unbeatable value-for-money and tourism offerings perfectly tailored to families and budget-conscious travelers.

Caroline Gachet, Marketing Director at Bourse des Voyages and Bourse des Vols, sums up this momentum: « Tunisia is showing excellent health, buoyed by the destination’s overall positive momentum this month ». After a cautious start to spring amid geopolitical tensions, the country is once again winning over travelers, confirming its status as a safe haven for accessible European beach vacations.

Offers to Djerba, Hammamet, and Sousse are back as best-sellers, especially among families. Industry professionals note that tourists are now prioritizing destinations with shorter flight times from France, while ensuring near-guaranteed sunshine and all-inclusive packages at controlled prices.

Accessibility is the key to Tunisia’s appeal

Tunisia’s summer success hinges on its pricing strategy. Despite rising kerosene costs impacting long-haul flights, mid-haul routes to Tunis or Monastir remain remarkably stable. Traditional carriers like Air France and Transavia, as well as tour operators, are offering targeted promotions on beach getaways, attracting cost-conscious travelers.

« Travelers are choosing North African beach destinations where ticket prices remain a decisive factor », says Caroline Gachet. The numbers back this up: while long-haul destination searches decline, those for Algiers, Oran, and Tunis are rising, despite slight dips for the latter two. Morocco, though still in the Top 5 for organized travel, shows a 11% drop—a sign that Tunisian competition is now ruthless.

Tour operators highlight that Tunisia ticks all the boxes for « accessible beach vacations »: club hotels, all-inclusive packages, and a tourism infrastructure honed over decades. Flight times—often under two hours from Paris—are an added bonus for families with children or time-pressed travelers.

North African beach destinations defy long-haul headwinds

This trend reflects a broader European aviation sector hit hard by rising kerosene prices, linked to Middle East tensions. Airlines, including Air France-KLM, have passed on fuel surcharges—up to €100 for economy round-trip tickets—directly impacting long-haul fares.

Facing this inflation, mid-haul Mediterranean and continental European destinations have become irresistible alternatives. Tunisia is capitalizing on this, positioning itself as France’s top choice, ahead of Morocco and Algeria, whose searches remain stable or slightly down.

Tourism professionals also note an improved safety perception. Despite ongoing regional tensions, Tunisia has reassured travelers by keeping its tourism infrastructure fully operational and maintaining relative political stability. Hotels and archaeological sites, such as those in Carthage, continue welcoming tourists without restrictions, further boosting the country’s appeal.

Encouraging signs for Tunisia’s economy

This tourism rebound comes at a critical juncture for Tunisia, where the sector accounts for over 7% of GDP and supports nearly half a million jobs directly and indirectly. Local authorities and industry leaders welcome this recovery, which should help offset losses from previous years marked by the pandemic and geopolitical crises.

Tour operators expect this momentum to continue through the summer, with particularly strong demand in July and August. All-inclusive packages, already popular, could gain further traction with last-minute promotions on flights and accommodations.

For French travelers, Tunisia represents a golden opportunity: guaranteed sunshine, controlled prices, and streamlined logistics. A winning combination that explains why Djerba and Hammamet are once again in the spotlight.

As long-haul tickets become a luxury for many, Tunisia stands out as the ideal destination for a successful vacation—without compromising on quality or budget.
