British Airways Revives East Africa Routes: Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar from London

Emeline Dudoura·

British Airways is making a bold move for summer 2027. On October 1, the UK’s flagship carrier announced the revival of its East Africa operations with a new triangular route linking London-Gatwick to Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. This initiative marks the airline’s return to these destinations after more than 13 years.

Starting May 29, 2027, British Airways will operate three weekly flights on this circuit using Boeing 777-200ER aircraft configured in three classes: Club World (Business), World Traveller Plus (Premium Economy), and World Traveller (Economy). Passengers can seamlessly travel from Tanzania to the idyllic beaches of Zanzibar without intermediate stops.

This initiative aligns with the airline’s broader strategy to expand its intercontinental network, with flights scheduled on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. A bold bet to capture adventure-seeking travelers while offering an alternative to flights from continental Europe.

Exclusive British Airways Service on the Tanzania-UK Market

With this new route, British Airways will become the only UK operator directly serving Tanzania. This monopoly position will allow it to capture all traffic between the two countries while positioning itself as the fifth European airline operating to East Africa. A boon for French, Belgian, or Swiss travelers looking to avoid cumbersome connections via other European hubs.

Flights will depart from London-Gatwick at 9:05 AM, arriving at Kilimanjaro at 8:20 PM after a nearly nine-hour flight. Passengers can then connect to Zanzibar at 9:20 PM, with a flight lasting just one hour and ten minutes, before departing back to London at 12:25 AM. The schedule is optimized to maximize time on the ground, with an evening arrival in Zanzibar and an early morning return to London.

Why These Destinations?

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, and the island of Zanzibar, with its white-sand beaches and Swahili heritage, represent two of Tanzania’s premier tourist gems. These destinations attract thousands of travelers annually, but access from Europe has been limited, often requiring connections in Nairobi or Dar es Salaam.

By offering direct flights from London, British Airways fills a gap in the market while enhancing its appeal to an international clientele. The route also aligns with the airline’s strategy to diversify its African network after years of reducing services on the continent.

British Airways isn’t stopping here: the airline is also preparing developments in other regions. In Latin America, it will relaunch a direct route between London and Buenos Aires starting March 28, 2027, after a three-year hiatus. This route will be operated with Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, eliminating intermediate stops for smoother travel.

Competitive Fares and Flexible Options

To attract travelers, British Airways is banking on competitive fares and flexible options. Tickets for the London-Kilimanjaro-Zanzibar-London triangular route will be available upon launch, with early-bird promotions for advance bookings. The airline also promises advantageous cancellation and modification policies in an era where travelers increasingly seek flexibility.

Passengers can book their trips via the British Airways website or through partner travel agencies. The airline highlights its Avios loyalty program, which allows members to earn points on these long-haul flights—often more rewarding than short-haul routes.

An added advantage for frequent flyers, who can optimize their travel while enjoying a premium experience.

A Boost for Tanzanian Tourism

This relaunch of flights to Tanzania comes at a critical time for the country’s tourism sector. Known for its national parks, safaris, and dream beaches, Tanzania has suffered from a lack of direct European air connections in recent years. Local tour operators and authorities hope this new service will attract more visitors, boosting the regional economy.

Hotels, local guides, and safari companies have already begun preparing for the influx of tourists, offering special deals for early arrivals. Tanzania, which is focusing on sustainable and high-end tourism, could see its appeal strengthened against competitors like Kenya or South Africa.

For British Airways, this initiative is part of a broader strategy to reclaim long-haul market share. After years of gradually withdrawing from certain African and Asian destinations, the UK carrier appears determined to regain ground, particularly against rivals like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines.

A Bold but Promising Gamble

While ambitious, the project is not without risks. Tanzania, though politically stable, remains a logistically and operationally demanding destination. Airlines must contend with sometimes limited airport infrastructure, high operational costs, and fierce competition on East Africa routes.

However, British Airways is banking on the quality of its service and customer loyalty to succeed. The airline, which has rebuilt itself after difficult years, is leveraging modern, comfortable aircraft and a renowned in-flight service to deliver excellence.

With this new route, British Airways proves it remains a key player in international air transport, capable of innovating to attract the most discerning travelers.

How to Book and Prepare for Your Trip

Travelers interested in this new service can book tickets as soon as sales open, likely in the coming months. The airline has already announced competitive fares with options for all budgets. Passengers can choose between a one-way ticket, round-trip, or a longer itinerary including a stay.

To make the most of the experience, early booking is recommended, especially for peak tourist seasons in Tanzania between June and September. Travelers can also opt for packages including accommodation, excursions, or safaris in partnership with local agencies.

British Airways has also announced partnerships with East Africa-specialized tour operators to offer turnkey packages for adventure or relaxation seekers.

One thing is certain: this new route will revitalize travel between Europe and Tanzania while offering passengers an unforgettable experience in the heart of East Africa.
