Air France Revives First Class in Africa: Why Abidjan Becomes the Showcase for La Première

Marc Leonelli·

From June 22, 2026, Air France will revolutionize premium travel in Sub-Saharan Africa by introducing its La Première cabin on the Paris-Charles de Gaulle–Abidjan route. This marks the first deployment of this elite class on the continent, aboard a Boeing 777-300ER, catering to growing demand for prestige travel between Europe and West Africa.

The route becomes the first Sub-Saharan departure point to offer this flagship product. A strategic choice for Air France, which is positioning Abidjan as its African hub for La Première, already deployed on major routes to New York-JFK, Los Angeles, Singapore, and Tokyo-Haneda. With two daily flights this summer, including a Boeing 777-300ER rotation equipped with the new cabin, the French carrier aims to transform Côte d’Ivoire into the showcase of its French excellence.

La Première’s Exclusivity Redefines Premium Offer in Africa

Abidjan is no ordinary destination for Air France. The Ivorian capital, gateway to West Africa, sees strong demand for business, diplomatic, and leisure travel. By deploying La Première here, Air France fills a gap in the African market. According to company data, flight AF702 will depart Paris-Charles de Gaulle at 13:55, arriving in Abidjan at 18:35, while the return flight AF703 will take off from Abidjan at 21:10, landing in Paris at 05:45 the next day. A schedule designed for business travelers and tourists alike seeking comfort.

The deployment of Air France La Première in Abidjan comes as the airline expands this product to an increasing number of destinations, including the United States, the Middle East, Asia, and South America. The goal is clear: to strengthen Air France’s position in the ultra-high-end segment amid growing competition from Gulf, Asian, and North American carriers. With 19 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft re-equipped with the new La Première cabin planned for summer 2026, Air France is gradually standardizing this offering across its long-haul network.

A Redesigned End-to-End Experience for Unmatched Luxury

The launch of La Première in Abidjan includes a redesigned end-to-end experience. Air France highlights an “integral La Première service,” featuring a dedicated airport lounge, personalized welcome, car transfer to the tarmac, and priority check-in. An experience embodying French luxury, with meticulous attention to detail.

The new La Première suites stand out for their generous dimensions: stretching across five windows, this seat-bed is one of the longest first-class spaces on the market. The concept is based on a fully modular space, with a large seat on one side and a sofa that transforms into a two-meter-long bed on the other. Catering, entrusted to Michelin-starred chef Mory Sacko, features a carefully selected wine and champagne list, along with premium bedding to ensure “peaceful nights at 35,000 feet,” in the airline’s words. This collaboration marks the first time Air France has entrusted its premium menu to an African chef, an initiative praised by observers.

“Since January 15, 2026, his creations have been progressively rolled out on Air France flights from Abidjan to Paris-Charles de Gaulle, with plans to extend to other African stops such as Cotonou, Dakar, Libreville, and Nairobi,” the airline notes. Mory Sacko, head of his Paris restaurant Mosuke, has designed twelve original creations for La Première, available in vegetarian, fish, poultry, or red meat options. His cuisine blends African terroirs with French gastronomy, prioritizing short supply chains and seasonal produce.

An Exhibition Celebrating the Arrival of La Première in Abidjan

To mark the arrival of La Première in Abidjan, Air France hosted an exhibition at the Sofitel Abidjan Hôtel Ivoire on June 11–12, 2026. The event allowed the airline to present its new cabins to Ivorian clients and partners while showcasing its heritage with a selection of historical uniforms designed by French couturiers such as Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and Christian Lacroix. The exhibition underscored the brand’s commitment to French elegance and its ambition to make Abidjan a showcase of its expertise.

Visitors also discovered the latest-generation in-flight entertainment system installed across all long-haul cabins, featuring over 1,500 hours of content on 38,000 individual screens. The offering includes a selection of CANAL+ programs, podcasts, and content tailored for younger passengers, regularly updated to suit the tastes and cultures of an international clientele.

A Premium Strategy Set for the Long Term

The deployment of La Première in Abidjan is part of a broader strategy to elevate Air France’s offerings. The airline has already renovated its Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins on part of its long-haul fleet and plans to continue this momentum in the years ahead. With this positioning, Air France aims to attract discerning clientele willing to pay for a journey that combines comfort, exclusivity, and French service.

“This positioning reflects strong demand in the prestige travel segment between Côte d’Ivoire and Paris, driven by robust business, diplomatic, and leisure traffic,” Air France emphasizes. An initiative that could inspire other carriers to enter this growing segment in Africa, where travelers increasingly seek high-end, personalized experiences.

For passengers seeking a memorable journey between Europe and Africa, Abidjan is now a must-stop destination, where Air France’s La Première excellence redefines premium travel standards on the continent.
