Visit low-cost airline segment in Latin America is undergoing a significant transformation with the arrival of the Airbus A321XLR. This long-haul, single-aisle aircraft, capable of covering long distances, is a strategic tool for the expansion of regional networks. Chilean airline SKY Airline, for example, is strengthening its fleet with three Airbus A321XLRs acquired via a sale-and-leaseback agreement with BOC Aviation, a major player in aircraft leasing.
These aircraft, powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, are due to be delivered between 2026 and 2027. They represent a first for BOC Aviation's portfolio, underlining the growing appeal of this type of aircraft for airlines wishing to extend their geographical coverage without systematically resorting to larger, more expensive aircraft.
BOC Aviation and SKY Airline, a strategic partnership
BOC Aviation, based in Singapore and listed on the Hong Kong stock exchange, adds SKY Airline to its customer base. The agreement is based on a purchase-and-leaseback transaction: BOC Aviation acquires the three A321XLRs and then leases them back to the Chilean airline on a long-term basis. These aircraft, scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2027, will mark the first A321XLR in the lessor's portfolio.
The A321XLR at the heart of SKY Airline's strategy
For SKY Airline, The integration of the A321XLR is a key step in the company's strategy of moving upmarket. The airline has already placed a firm order with Airbus for ten A321XLRs, aimed at expanding its international network from Santiago de Chile. SKY CEO Holger Paulmann emphasized that the new fleet will enable the company to expand its international route offering, while maintaining a low-cost model and competitive fares.
Arturo Barreira, Airbus President for Latin America, confirms the potential of the A321XLR: « the A321XLR will enable SKY to offer its customers new destinations, such as direct flights between Santiago de Chile and Miami in the USA« . The aircraft opens the way to cross-border routes previously inaccessible to low-cost airlines.
The A321XLR: a single-aisle jet designed for Latin America
L'Airbus A321XLR is the ultra-long-range version of the A320neo family. Designed to offer increased range and payload for single-aisle aircraft, it boasts a range of up to 4,700 nautical miles. Its fuel consumption per seat is around 30% lower than that of previous-generation aircraft, making it a particularly attractive tool for opening up new routes with a reduced environmental footprint.
In the Latin American context, the A321XLR opens up unprecedented possibilities for direct connections from hubs such as Santiago. Destinations such as Miami, Atlanta, Dallas, San Diego or Phoenix become accessible by direct flight, potentially transforming so-called «long-haul» routes that did not justify the use of a wide-body aircraft. This makes routes that were previously too costly to operate economically viable.
Efficiency, GTF engines and sustainability
The A321XLRs destined for SKY Airline will be powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1000G from the GTF (Geared Turbofan) family. These engines are recognized for their improved fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions per seat than previous generations. Coupled with the optimized airframe of the A321XLR, this engine should enable the airline to reduce its cost per available seat kilometer, while improving its environmental performance.
This fleet modernization is part of a wider trend in Latin America, where major players such as LATAM Airlines Group have also ordered A321XLRs for long-haul transatlantic and regional routes. For BOC Aviation, The A321XLR is a key element in the Group's offer to carriers wishing to expand their network without significantly increasing the size of their fleet.
