Madeira is a Portuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean. With its subtropical climate, the weather is fine almost all year round on this island, nicknamed the Flower Island or the Garden of the Atlantic. A destination of choice for tourists, easily accessible by plane and part of the European Union. If Madeira has managed to adapt and become an attractive destination for numerous tourists, with of course Funchal, its capital Madeira is not only a lively island, but also one with many well-known spots: the pools of Porto Moniz, Cap Girao, the houses of Santana, etc. Nevertheless, it remains a natural island whose true richness can only be discovered on excursions. Madeira has few sandy beaches, so swimming is not the main activity when visiting Madeira.

Madeira, an island of volcanic origin

Of volcanic origin, the island is particularly mountainous: the picos are numerous and reach altitudes of over 1,800 metres. Since the 15th century, man has been able to adapt by settling all around the island, giving way to an incredible natural environment in the center of the island. The road network is also organized all around the island, with numerous tunnels providing rapid access to the various villages. The roads through the heart of the island are winding and dizzying. However, they allow you to discover a superb natural environment. Numerous panoramic views, known as miradouros, will make the most of your visit. Madeira a real favorite. A mix of mountain and ocean, in a verdant setting thanks to the island's many springs.

A protected island

Many areas of the island are protected by parks and nature reserves. Funchal Ecological Park is just one example, but Madeira is also Europe's largest protected marine reserve. On land and in the ocean, flora and fauna can evolve in a natural environment. two-thirds of the island's territory is protectedThis allows the island's natural heritage to remain intact. Madeira's primary forestThe island has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1999. So it's with respect for nature that you should discover the island.

Discover the island on foot

Getting organized excursions on foot during your trip that will allow you to truly discover Madeira's nature. An island of mountains, forests, cliffs and an extensive network of hiking trails. You can choose between different hikes according to your shape or interests You can hike in the mountains, along a levada (a man-made water channel dug into the mountains) or in the Madeiran forest. Our most beautiful hikes take in the São Lourenço coast, the Caldeirao Verde forest and the island's highest peaks, Pico Ruivo. Numerous marked trails and some routes are even recommended by Madeira's tourist office.

How can you protect the environment in Madeira?

To respect the endemic nature of the island, it is necessary to follow a few rules For example, it is forbidden to pick plants, especially flowers. You should also take care not to stray off the paths, as this could crush or damage the flora, and could put you in danger: nature is abundant and can sometimes resemble a real jungle, the ground can be slippery, and some paths are on cliffs. It's a good idea to find out all you can about the island before setting out, and to make sure you're properly equipped. As for the animals, please be respectful, quiet, do not feed them and do not leave any garbage behind. Madeira is a natural treasure, and should remain so!
