Lufthansa will launch a new direct route between its Frankfurt hub and Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia, on October 25, 2026. This new route, operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner equipped with the new Allegris cabin, reflects the German airline's ambition to expand its network in Southeast Asia. Offered year-round with five weekly frequencies, this connection aims to offer optimized connections on Lufthansa's global network.

The Boeing 787-9 and the Allegris cabin as arguments

The choice of Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner for this new route is not insignificant. Lufthansa presents it as the most modern and efficient aircraft in its long-haul fleet. The aircraft's configuration comprises 287 seats in three classes, with the new Allegris. Progressively deployed on the Boeing 787, A350 and 747-8, this represents a significant move upmarket for the Lufthansa group. Business Class has been completely redesigned, offering greater privacy, direct aisle access and new-generation screens. Premium Economy and Economy have also been modernized to enhance the passenger experience. Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, points out that « the innovative Allegris cabin offers our customers the highest level of comfort and underlines our premium aspiration to provide leisure and business travellers alike with a first-class travel experience" .

With this new non-stop service to Kuala Lumpur and the deployment of our latest-generation Dreamliner, we are creating the ideal conditions to participate in the growth of Southeast Asia.

This new offer underlines the growing importance of the region for European air transport. Lufthansa already serves Bangkok, Singapore and Phuket from its European hubs, and Kuala Lumpur now becomes the Group's fourth destination in the region.

A bet on Southeast Asia's growth and economic dimension

Malaysia is establishing itself as a major tourist and business destination in Southeast Asia. In 2025, the country welcomed 42.2 million international visitors, making it the most visited destination in the region. This growth is underpinned by a more flexible visa policy, increased air capacity and a diversified tourism offering. Lufthansa also emphasizes the economic dimension of the new route. Germany is Malaysia's most important trading partner within the European Union, and Malaysia is Germany's most important partner within ASEAN. More than 700 German companies are based in Malaysia, creating some 65,000 jobs, and often using Kuala Lumpur as a hub for Southeast Asia.

The new route makes Lufthansa the only airline to offer non-stop flights to Malaysia from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy. Frankfurt thus becomes a privileged gateway to Kuala Lumpur for passengers from these markets.

Sustainability and efficiency at the heart of our strategy

The use of Boeing 787-9, The new-generation, more fuel-efficient aircraft is also in line with the company's targets for reducing emissions per seat-kilometre. This aspect has become central to Lufthansa's long-haul strategy, in response to growing demand for more environmentally-friendly air transport. In this way, the company aims to reconcile network expansion with its commitment to sustainable development.

The new link Frankfurt-Kuala Lumpur by Lufthansa represents a significant step in the strengthening of its presence in Southeast Asia. The combination of a modern aircraft, an innovative cabin and a destination with strong economic and tourism potential positions this route as a strategic axis for the German airline.
