Eurowings reinvents the cabin experience on its Airbus A320neo with a brand-new premium space

El-Adjim Baddani·

German airline Eurowings is making a significant strategic shift in the configuration of its single-aisle cabins. By introducing a premium mini-cabin in 2+2 configuration in front of its Airbus A320neo, Eurowings breaks with the established 3+3 seat standard. This initiative, inspired by long-haul standards, is designed to meet growing demand for more personal space and improved services on medium-haul flights.

This new offer, dubbed «Premium BIZ», includes eight seats in the first two rows. It represents a significant departure from traditional business classes on European flights, which often make do with a neutralized central seat. The aim is to offer a more comfortable and intimate travel experience, particularly relevant for flights lasting between three and six hours, markets where demand for long-haul services is on the rise.

A concept successfully tested on the Berlin-Dubai route

The premium zone concept was initially deployed on November 22, 2025 on the route between Berlin-Brandenburg and Dubai, one of the longest single-aisle routes operated by the airline. Feedback from this flight, which sold out in the BIZ premium zone, confirmed the market appeal of this new product. Max Kownatzki, Managing Director of Eurowings, reported a «very positive» customer reception, underlining the «increased personal space, enhanced privacy and improved on-board service».

Building on these initial successes, Eurowings plans to extend this new configuration to other routes in both the business and leisure segments. Destinations such as London, Majorca and the Canary Islands are envisaged, with fine-tuned network planning currently being finalized.

A premium cabin inspired by long-haul routes

To fit out this area, Eurowings chose the «Comoda» model from Italian manufacturer Geven. This premium seat was customized to meet the company's requirements. In 2+2 configuration, the seats feature an ergonomic backrest, reinforced padding and a wider seat. An adjustable leg rest is also integrated to reduce fatigue on longer journeys.

The BIZ premium seat experience includes USB ports, a pillow, blanket and amenity kit, amenities usually reserved for long-haul cabins. Service is also enhanced, with an aperitif, a meal served on china and an expanded beverage offer. Legroom is announced as being close to one meter, a feature that marks a break with the usual standards of European single-aisle aircraft.

«We're adapting industry standards to new customer expectations,» insists Max Kownatzki, underlining the growing demand for affordable premium options on the longest medium-haul flights.

A «value airline» positioning»

This initiative, announced at ITB Berlin, is part of a wider strategy to reposition Eurowings within the Lufthansa Group. Formerly positioned as a pure low-cost airline, Eurowings is now claiming the status of a «value airline», favoring a stronger quality-price ratio rather than a policy of premium fares alone. By sacrificing cabin density in favor of comfort, Eurowings is taking a different approach to the major European low-cost airlines, which focus on maximizing the number of seats.

Recognized as the «Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe 2025» by Skytrax, Eurowings sees this product as an opportunity to stand out from the crowd, capitalizing on the upscale services already offered, including lounge access, greater flexibility and Miles & More mileage accumulation.

A laboratory for the cabins of the future

The introduction of the Premium BIZ zone on A320neo aircraft involves replacing two rows in a 3+3 configuration with a 2+2 configuration, creating eight exclusive seats per converted aircraft. This strategic choice will enable Eurowings to carry out a full-scale test of the viability of the 2+2 layout on single-aisle aircraft, both in terms of unit revenues and customer acceptance. The data gathered on the Berlin-Dubai route, which is particularly representative of business and leisure customers between Germany and the United Arab Emirates, will serve as a basis for reflection on future medium- and long-haul cabin concepts within the Lufthansa Group.

The advertised surcharge for these BIZ Premium seats starts at around €399.99 per trip, in addition to the BIZclass fare. This positioning places the product in a premium niche, but potentially attractive to customers willing to pay more for comfort approaching that offered on wide-body aircraft.
